Nine passengers were injured when a MARC commuter was rear-ended by an Amtrak engine outside Union Station, Maryland Department of Transportation officials said.
MARC train No. 419 was unloading its passengers at the station about 10 a.m., when it was struck by a locomotive, Amtrak spokeswoman said. The collision knocked the wheels of the last car off the tracks.
Some of the nine injured passengers were taken to the hospital with neck and back injuries, said Amtrak spokeswoman Karina Romero said.
None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, Amtrak spokeswoman Karina Romero said.
“It was mostly bumps and bruises,” Romero said.
The accident appeared to have occurred when the Amtrak locomotive tried to connect to the MARC locomotive so it could pull the engine into the Uniion Station shop for maintenance, Romero said.
