Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe had a lot to say Wednesday morning in response to a double murder in Roanoke, Va., including that the shooting proves the need for stricter gun laws and that the alleged gunman was likely a “disgruntled employee.”
However, when asked if he knew anything about whether the suspect, Vester Flanagan, had obtained his gun illegally, McAuliffe had no comment.
“I’m trying to bring common sense ideas. As I say, I’m a hunter, I’m a gun owner, I go through background checks,” the Democratic governor said in response to a reporters repeated questions about the shooting of two WDBJ-CBS employees.
“There are individuals in this country who should not be allowed to own a firearm,” McAuliffe said. “And it’s just to me common sense and it’s just tragic, that this kind of legislation cannot be passed and signed into law.”
After more questioning, however, it became clear later that McAuliffe was unclear on the details of the slayings.
“Governor, do we know that he is not a permit holder?” a reporter asked. “Do we know that he has a criminal background where he would not be allowed to have a gun?”
“I don’t know anything,” the governor eventually responded. “I don’t. At this stage, I don’t.”
