Trump unhappy with border security funding in omnibus bill: Report

President Trump is reportedly upset with the lack of funding for a southwest border wall in the spending deal reached Wednesday morning by House and Senate leaders.

The $1.3 trillion omnibus bill would keep the government funded through September and prevent a shutdown that would happen Saturday without a deal. Details of the spending package were still being released as of Wednesday afternoon.

Despite including $1.6 billion for “physical barriers and technology” along the U.S.-Mexico border, the Huffington Post reported Wednesday that Trump is displeased with the bill’s funding for immigration enforcement. The White House had previously requested $25 billion for the construction of a physical barrier along the border, in addition to other border security enhancements.

Administration officials had unsuccessfully lobbied Democrats earlier this week to approve the president’s original funding request in exchange for extending protections through the fall of 2020 for undocumented youth.

The current spending legislation also excludes language to strip so-called sanctuary cities of their federal funding – something the White House had pushed hard for – and does not fulfill Trump’s request that an increased number of detention beds be made available to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

A White House spokesperson did not immediately return the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
