Mexico expects NAFTA talks to take place in late August

A top Mexican government official on Tuesday said he expects talks to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement by late August.

Mexican Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo told reporters in Washington, D.C., he believes the Trump administration will inform Congress early next week of its plans to schedule talks on the 23-year-old deal.

Guajardo is scheduled to meet with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer in Vietnam on Thursday, where they will discuss the agreement more.

Trump vowed to revoke NAFTA while on the campaign trail last year, saying it did not put American workers’ interests first.
