Car plows into crowd of protesters outside Rep. Ed Royce’s district office

A car drove into a group of immigration protesters 30 miles southeast of Los Angeles outside of Rep. Ed Royce’s, R-Calif., office on Thursday.

Daniel Wenzek, the alleged driver, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, and was booked and released pending further investigation, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Protesters threw their hands on the vehicle as the car moved toward them prior to speeding up. One of the protesters was tossed onto the car’s hood as a result. The car was stopped by police afterwards.

Several hundred people were involved in the protest, attempting to deliver letters to Royce to convey what losing temporary protected immigration status would mean to them.

Royce was in transit on a flight to California when the vehicle approached the crowd.

No injuries have been reported to law enforcement yet, but police are requesting witnesses or anyone injured to contact them. David Huerta, president of SEIU United Service Workers West, said “several” of the union’s members were taken to the hospital.
