Bob Knight, Hall of Fame college basketball coach, dead at 83

College basketball coach Bob Knight has died at 83 years old.

Knight holds the record for winning the fifth-most NCAA basketball games, at 903. He became famous both for his successful record and infamous temper, testing the limits of the league in countless outbursts on and off the court. He died at home surrounded by his family, according to a statement posted on his website.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share that Coach Bob Knight passed away at his home in Bloomington surrounded by his family,” the statement read.

“We are grateful for all the thoughts and prayers, and appreciate the continued respect for our privacy as Coach requested a private family gathering, which is being honored. We will continue to celebrate his life and remember him, today and forever as a beloved Husband, Father, Coach, and Friend.”

While a cause of death wasn’t given, the statement asked for memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association or Marian University instead of flowers.

Knight was also an outspoken supporter of former President Donald Trump, speaking at many of his rallies. Trump expressed his condolences shortly after news of his death.

“The World just lost an incredible person, the Great Bobby Knight,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

He added, “He was not just an award-winning and record-breaking Coach, he was loyal to his Players, to his State, and to our Country—Tough as nails, but a big heart. When he Endorsed me, it was like the whole Great World of Indiana opened up happy and wide. Our hearts and prayers are with his wonderful wife Karen and Sons, Tim and Pat—Their Father was a great man!”
