Moms for Liberty was asked through a multitude of cards to “stop bullying” LGBT children, with the cards created by middle schoolers at a school district in Seattle.
Moms for Liberty, a parental rights group, revealed online that they received a package from the Seattle School District, which included a letter asking the group to read the cards “from concerned middle school students in Seattle, Washington.” The cards contained a variety of messages, including “LGBTQ rights are human rights,” “Gay is slay, stop being a rat,” and “Love is love.”

“Public School Administrators should put our public taxpayer dollars towards fixing the abysmal reading scores in the U.S. rather than writing hate letters,” a quote from Moms for Liberty’s co-founder Tiffany Justice read, which the group gave to the Washington Examiner. “Taxpayers spend over $18,000 per student every year on public education in the Seattle Public Schools. There is no world in which activism in schools is more important than the basic skills of reading and writing.”

Seattle Public Schools told the Washington Examiner that the materials in the package were sent last spring “as an independent activity,” and was not done as part of the school’s curriculum.
“Seattle Public Schools is dedicated to fostering welcoming, inclusive, and identity-safe environments for all our students,” read a statement the district gave to the Washington Examiner. “We firmly uphold the rights of our students, staff, and families to express their authentic selves. We take great pride in our unwavering support for LGBTQIA+ students, staff, and families, which is reflected in our policies and everyday practices.”
The package’s letter was from Ann Christianson, who is listed as “social studies” in the school’s staff directory. The letter also stated that Christianson is a GSA coordinator, possibly a reference to the school’s Gay Straight Alliance groups.
The return address on the package included the addresses of both Seattle Public Schools and John Sanford Center for Educational Excellence, the location of the district’s office.

Moms for Liberty was founded in 2021 by two Florida mothers and former school board members who were concerned about problems surrounding pandemic restrictions. Since its founding, the group has also been involved in selecting which books end up in school libraries.
The group has garnered the attention of critics over its stances for parental rights, including the Southern Poverty Law Center, which labeled Moms for Liberty as an extremist hate group earlier this year. Most recently, actor LeVar Burton joked that “hands will not need to be thrown tonight” since no members of the group were attending the 2023 National Book Awards.
