Donald Trump voluntarily drops suit against Michael Cohen

Former President Donald Trump voluntarily dropped his $500 million lawsuit against his former lawyer Michael Cohen on Thursday but is allowed to refile the suit in the future.

The former president’s campaign said Trump was dropping the civil suit because his presidential campaign and other court cases were taking up too much of his time, according to CBS News. Trump is facing four major court cases in New York, Florida, Georgia, and Washington, D.C. He faces a total of 91 charges.

“Once President Trump has prevailed in dealing with the witch hunts against him, he will continue to pursue his claims against Michael Cohen, who rightfully deserves to, and will be held accountable for his unlawful words and actions just as the Southern District of New York held him accountable for numerous non-Trump related acts and crimes, making Cohen a very ‘proud’ felon,” the statement said.

Trump was expected to sit for a deposition in Florida on Monday. Despite the court cases, Trump is still the front-runner for the GOP nomination for president, leading his opponents by considerable margins. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is currently ranking as a distant second.

“Great news out of the Southern District of Florida tonight,” Cohen’s lawyer Danya Perry posted to the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. “Rather than let me depose him on Monday, Donald Trump voluntarily dismissed his $500 million lawsuit against our client Michael Cohen.”

Trump filed the suit against Cohen in April, citing violations of attorney-client privilege and alleged breaches of contract. It also came a week after the former president was arraigned in court on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. Cohen had provided key testimony to the grand jury about hush money payments he made on behalf of Trump to porn star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign.

“This is an action arising from [Cohen’s] multiple breaches of fiduciary duty, unjust enrichment, conversion and breaches of contract by virtue of [Cohen’s] past service as [Trump’s] employee and attorney,” the lawsuit said.
