Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) performed the Heimlich maneuver on Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) after she began choking on food during a GOP conference luncheon on Thursday, two senators in the meeting told the Washington Examiner.
Ernst was hosting the luncheon for her colleagues alongside the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. Ribeye and pork chops were on the menu. The incident appeared to happen early on in the luncheon before most of the senators had arrived, according to five Republicans who spoke to reporters after the meeting about what occurred.
