Ivanka Trump will testify at Donald Trump’s fraud trial

Judge Arthur Engoron ruled on Friday that Ivanka Trump will have to testify in the fraud trial for her father, former President Donald Trump, in New York.

“I want to see her in person,” Engoron said at the trial on Friday, per ABC News. “That is how we prefer testimony.”

The decision came after both sides presented their arguments to the judge, with attorneys for the state of New York arguing Ivanka Trump was the contact with lenders for the Trump Hotel at the Old Post Office in Washington, D.C., and saying that she still operates business in the Empire State.

Ivanka Trump was not at the courtroom on Friday, but her attorney had argued that she had not done business in New York since 2017.

A timetable for when Ivanka Trump will testify at her father’s trial has not been scheduled, and Engoron said it should not be scheduled before Wednesday to give her the chance to appeal his ruling.

Ivanka Trump was initially part of the $250 million lawsuit filed against the Trump Organization last year, but she was dismissed from the case by an appeals court in June.

“The allegations against defendant Ivanka Trump do not support any claims that accrued after February 6, 2016,” the June decision dismissing her from the case said. “Thus, all claims against her should have been dismissed as untimely.”

The case against Donald Trump stems from a lawsuit New York Attorney General Letitia James filed last year alleging fraud by the Trump Organization. She is seeking $250 million in damages, along with trying to block Donald Trump from doing business in New York. Engoron has already found Donald Trump liable for the fraud claims, but now the nonjury trial will proceed to examine the six claims brought by James.
