19 residents seek county school board positions

Anne Arundel residents will have an opportunity to meet the 19 hopefuls vying for two open school board seats.

“This is a little unexpected,” said Joshua Greene, chairman of the nominating commission.

“We were hoping to get four, but 19 ? wow.”

The candidates Monday are expected to introduce themselves and answer questions from the nominating commission, which will recommend at least two people for each position to Gov. Martin O?Malley.

The names will be forwarded to O?Malley in May, who will make a prompt decision, according to his office.

Board President Tricia Johnson, who?s running for re-election, said the number of applicants is “par for the course.”

“The first time I ran there were eight or nine that ran for the seat,” she said.

Thirteen candidates are competing for Johnson?s at-large, five-year seat.

The remaining hopefuls are seeking a new position for District 32, which includes Glen Burnie, Linthicum, Millersville and parts of Severn, said school system spokesman Bob Mosier.

Collin Wojciechowski, a Chesapeake High School junior, will succeed student board member Sage Snider, which is expected at July?s board meeting, if O?Malley appoints him, Mosier said.

The nominating commission includes representatives from the Teachers Association of Anne Arundel County and the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce, among other groups.
