Reparation Nation: The country’s first reparations program for black Americans
In 2021, Evanston became the first city in America to approve a plan to make reparations available to black residents. $25,000 to help with a down payment on a house, mortgage, or home repairs.
The decision to focus on housing, and not slavery, came after residents said housing policies of the Jim Crow era and redlining overwhelmingly hurt them and created a vicious cycle of poverty to hold them down.
