What’s at stake for election day 2023; Biden unveils $16.4 billion rail grants at Amtrak

As voters in a handful of states head to the polls Tuesday for the 2023 off-year elections, much will be at stake not just for the respective races but also for implications that could affect the 2024 presidential cycle. Abortion access, a race for the state Supreme Court, and control of state legislatures will be on the ballot in various states on Tuesday, and it could affect President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign as well as indicate lessons for former President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, as he dominates the GOP primary field.

President Joe Biden on Monday unveiled more than $16 billion in new grants for passenger rail projects that will benefit an Amtrak route well-traveled by the commander in chief. The president, speaking at the Amtrak Bear Maintenance Shops, outlined how the grants will “overhaul” trains and infrastructure across 25 rail projects along the Northeast Corridor.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds endorsed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in his bid to be the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential nominee. DeSantis is expected to use Reynolds’ endorsement to jump-start his campaign that has, for the most part, failed to chip away at former President Donald Trump’s hold on the party electorate. Reynolds has long been supportive of his campaign and has, at times, sparred with Trump.
