THE DAILY OUTRAGE: Dead language

WHO: National Park Service

WHAT: Part of a three-year, $446,000 federal grant was spent to hold a 10-day language immersion retreat in Tlingit for more than 30 people at Alaska’s Glacier Bay Lodge.

WHY IT’S AN OUTRAGE: Among Native Americans, there are fewer than 200 fluent Tlingit speakers. Even the tribe’s own elders admit they don’t use Tlingit to communicate with each other on a daily basis.
