National security adviser H.R. McMaster shoots down departure rumors

President Trump’s national security adviser H.R. McMaster shot down rumors on Tuesday that he was considering leaving the West Wing for the Defense Department in the coming days.

“I have a job. It’s a tremendous honor to do this job … and it is my intention to go as long and as hard as I can to serve the president and the nation,” the three-star Army general told reporters.

Speculation about McMaster’s tenure in the White House has long swirled around Washington, with some claiming he and Trump have struggled to develop a relationship similar to that which the president had with former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

In recent days, rumors emerged that he was weighing a return to the military.

McMaster will not join the president, top aides, and Cabinet secretaries as part of the U.S. delegation to the World Economic Forum later this week.
