A Tesla driver who crashed into a fire truck in Utah last week was using the Model S’s autopilot feature, the local police department said on Monday.
The 28-year-old woman was on her phone at the time of the accident, the South Jordan Police Department said in a statement.
“Tesla has not yet received any data from the car and thus does not know the facts of what occurred,” the company said in a statement.
The crash is at least the second involving a Tesla vehicle using so-called self-driving technology. The independent National Transportation Safety Board is investigating a March fatality involving the company’s Model X, in which the feature had also been engaged.
CEO Elon Musk, however, has pointed to the relative safety of the autonomous driving technology compared to distracted driving. More than 3,450 people were killed in vehicle accidents in 2015 alone, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The latest news comes as the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company struggles to ramp up production of its mass-market Model 3 amid a number of executive departures.
