Days after a shooting in Dayton killed nine people, the Ohio Republican who represents the city in Congress came out in favor of a ban on military-style weapons and other gun control measures.
Rep. Mike Turner announced Tuesday that he supports banning weapons like the one used in the Sunday morning shooting outside a bar and restaurant in Dayton that killed nine and wounded 27. He also signaled support for legislation that would place limits on the capacity of magazines.
“I strongly support the Second Amendment, but we must prevent mentally unstable people from terrorizing our communities with military style weapons,” Turner said in a statement. “I will support legislation that prevents the sale of military style weapons to civilians, a magazine limit, and red flag legislation. The carnage these military style weapons are able to produce when available to the wrong people is intolerable.”
“I understand not every shooting can be prevented or stopped from these measures, but I do believe these steps are essential,” he added.
The gunman in Dayton used a military-style weapon in the shooting equipped with a hundred-round drum magazine. He was able to fire off at least 41 rounds before being killed by police less than a minute after the massacre began.
Hours before the Dayton shooting, a gunman in El Paso, Texas, opened fire at a Walmart, killing 22. The suspect reportedly penned a manifesto prior to the rampage expressing his desire to stop the “Hispanic invasion of Texas.”
Fellow GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois came out Monday in support of raising the minimum age to purchase guns to 21 years old.
