Actress Susan Sarandon‘s Twitter account shared a photo of police officers mourning fallen NYPD officer Jason Rivera with a caption comparing the scene to fascism. While the photo was shared Monday, Sarandon has not responded to requests to verify that she personally posted it. Yet it remains on her personal Twitter account.
“I’m gonna tell my kids this is what fascism looks like,” the quote tweet within the photo reads. Sarandon seemingly captioned the photo again. “So, if all these cops weren’t needed for CRIME that day, doesn’t that mean they aren’t needed ANY day?”
Rivera’s memorial service happened at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Friday. He and his partner Wilbert Mora were shot on Jan. 21 after responding to a domestic dispute between Lashawn McNeil and his mother. Rivera, Mora, and McNeil all died of their gunshot wounds.

Others on Twitter slammed Sarandon and defended Rivera’s reputation as a police officer. Even retired Los Angeles officer Sal LaBarbera responded to the tweet. “You seriously need help,” LaBarbera wrote. “Let’s hope you never need us.”

Then, retired police Sgt. Jim Vaglica, who currently stars on American Grit, tried to get the attention of his fellow Fox stars, tagging all of Sarandon’s co-stars on Monarch to get their reactions. “Country Music Fans & All Americans want to know YOUR Stance on this Disgusting Post,” he wrote. “Don’t Ignore it. We will not forget.”

Meanwhile, some inexplicably agreed with Sarandon. Comedian Jordain Searles wrote, “she’s right? what’s the issue.”
