Massive fire breaks out in California shipping center

A massive fire erupted at an Amazon shipping facility in Southern California.

Early Friday morning, thick plumes of black smoke began to rise from a massive, 600,000 square foot storage facility as fires raged throughout the structure with 100 people inside, though no injuries were reported.

Aerial footage of the facility, located in Redlands, California, shows the roof of the structure had collapsed as well as entire sections of the building. Officials said they are concerned more areas of the building could also collapse.

“We are glad everyone is safe, and thankful for the efforts of the local firefighters and first responders,” Amazon told CNN in a statement. “This site was operated by a third party and we will support them throughout this process.”

Redlands Fire Chief Jim Topoleski said that an investigation would be launched into the cause of the fire in the building, which was new and equipped with the latest fire protections.

Amazon said it expects minimal impact on the times of deliveries because customer orders can be completed from other shipping facilities.

Firefighters at the scene said they contained the fire from spreading to other businesses nearby and are waiting for some areas to “burn out.”
