Joe Biden made the right decision by selecting Kamala Harris to be his running mate, according to former Republican presidential contender Carly Fiorina.
Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard, noted on Wednesday that she has political disagreements with Harris but said she was relieved that Biden made good on his promise to select a female running mate who is not white.
“From a political point of view, I think it was a smart choice. I think he really needed to select a woman of color,” Fiorina said during an interview on Wharton Business Daily.
“And I think regardless of people’s political persuasions, I think honestly it just reminds us that diversity and possibility are the core of what makes this nation great,” she later added.
Fiorina ran for president against President Trump in the 2016 GOP primary. Trump was criticized for mocking her physical appearance during the run, and Fiorina became one of Trump’s most prominent Republican critics after the election, even endorsing his impeachment.
She also briefly joined Sen. Ted Cruz’s ticket as vice president in their last-ditch effort to stop Trump from winning the Republican nomination. She said that she was happy to see a woman such as Harris on the general election ticket in 2020.
“As a woman, I think it is high time that we see a ferociously self-determined, highly accomplished, thoroughly prepared woman of color at the top of the national ticket,” Fiorina said.
