Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner compared actress Debra Messing’s call for reporters to out President Trump supporters in Hollywood to the “early days” of Nazi Germany.
Messing and her Will & Grace co-star, Eric McCormack, faced accusations of McCarthyism after asking the media to “report on everyone” who attends an upcoming Trump fundraiser in Beverly Hills “so the rest of us can be clear about who we don’t wanna work with.” They eventually apologized, but Trump still called on NBC to fire “McCarthy style Racist” Messing.
Faulkner and a panel on her show Outnumbered addressed the controversy on Friday’s episode.
“Just take a look at the simple fact that what you are doing is trying to destroy someone’s livelihood, destroy who they are, basically cordon them off from the rest of society because you disagree with what they are saying,” she said. “You know what that reminds me of? Very early days in Germany.”
“My husband is Jewish,” Faulkner continued. “We’ve talked about this recently, where because of your faith, because of your beliefs, and because some thought that it was outside of where it needed to be, they would go after your businesses and your livelihood. I’m not saying that that is the slippery slope here, I’m just reminding people that it did happen.”
Network contributor Jessica Tarlov commented, “We could do an entire hour on comparisons of things that are going on in modern society today that are reminiscent, and frighteningly similar, to things that went on in early Nazi Germany.”
