Florida Gov. Rick Scott is meeting Wednesday with students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who are calling for action to prevent gun violence in the wake of last week’s deadly shooting at the Parkland, Fla., school.
The governor’s office confirmed Scott is gathering with students and state lawmakers to discuss how they can ensure what occurred last week at the South Florida school doesn’t happen again. The meeting is scheduled to last from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., according to a copy of the governor’s schedule posted online.
A spokeswoman for Scott’s office said the forthcoming meeting is solely about “hearing directly from them about what changes they hope to see made.”
Scott will reveal a proposal later in the week.
Student protesters descended on Scott’s office in Tallahassee, Fla., on Wednesday to deliver a petition to the governor and demand a meeting.
The students chanted “Where is Rick Scott?” as they crowded outside of his office.
Scott’s office said the governor was at a funeral for one of the victims of the shooting at the Parkland high school at the time and later returned to Tallahassee.
Students are pressuring lawmakers both in the Florida legislature and in Congress to enact more stringent gun laws after 17 people were killed and several were injured in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last week.
Some lawmakers have begun to discuss several proposals following the shooting, and President Trump is holding a listening session with students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, parents, and teachers.
