WHITMAN, Mass. (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency says it’s reached a settlement with two related business to cover cleanup costs at a former Whitman shoe factory.

The EPA announced Friday that the Brown Shoe Co. and Brown Group Retail have agreed to reimburse the agency $450,000 of its past costs.
The 20-acre site has been vacant since 1973.
The EPA removed 2,800 tons of contaminated soil from the Whitman site between 2005 and 2006. The agency says three tanks removed from the ground there contained a combined 10,000 gallons of contaminated sludge.
The former shoe factory was operated by Regal Shoe Co. between 1903 and 1954. The EPA alleged Regal was the polluter.
But since Regal merged with the Pennsylvania-based Brown Shoe Co., Brown assumed liability for the property.
