Biden feels ‘good’ after Macron election win in France

President Joe Biden welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron becoming his country’s first leader to secure a second term in two decades.

Biden told reporters he felt “good” about Macron’s win over nationalist-populist Marine Le Pen, who lost 41.5% to 58.5%, in the second and final round of voting on the weekend.

Biden added that he tried to connect with Macron, a critical Western ally amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but his French counterpart “was at the Eiffel Tower having a good time.”

“I’m going to be talking to him today,” Biden said Monday at Joint Base Andrews after White House aides spoke with Macron’s staff.

A tweet from White House chief of staff Ron Klain comparing the politics before Macron’s apparent win to Biden’s before the 2022 midterm elections went viral over the weekend.

“President Macron appears to have secured a double-digit victory over LePen, at a time when his approval rating is 36%,” he wrote. “Hmmm.”

Biden’s current average approval rating is 41%, or a net negative 13 points, according to RealClearPolitics.

Biden used the same “good” descriptor for Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.

He told reporters upon his return from a weekend in Delaware he would debrief with his top diplomat and Pentagon chief later in the day.
