Trump campaign takes credit for economic recovery ‘with little help’ from Republican Congress

Trump campaign officials slammed Congress in a fundraising email on Thursday, claiming the president deserves sole credit for increased economic growth because the Washington establishment has offered “little help” of their own.

“With the news that the economy grew even faster than imagined, President Donald Trump is already showing what he is capable of through his own leadership and America First policies, with little help from the political establishment in Washington,” Michael Glassner, the executive director of Trump’s re-election campaign, said in a statement.

A final assessment of the second quarter economic growth released by the U.S. Department of Commerce on Thursday indicated that gross domestic product increased at a rate of 3.1 percent between April and June, marking an upward revision of 0.1 percent from a report issued last month.

“Imagine what the president can do for hard-working families all across America if he has the help of every Republican in Congress, as well as Democrats,” Glassner added, citing the upcoming tax reform effort as an issue that should attract bipartisan support on Capitol Hill.

The email comes one day after Trump delivered his tax reform pitch to an audience in Indianapolis, in which he urged Republicans to swiftly pass a tax package that boosts middle-income Americans and business owners.

Trump has been critical of his own party in recent days for twice failing to advance legislation to repeal and replace Obamacare, saying he expected to have a replacement bill on his desk “my first day in office.”

Congressional Republicans are now aiming to enact a broad tax reform package by the end of the year so that they have one major victory to tout as they prepare for the 2018 midterm election season.
