GOP lawmaker calls for ‘Never Kevin’ Republicans to be banned from committees

A Republican lawmaker called for members of the conference planning to vote against Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to be banned from committees.

Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL) stirred the pot at a tense meeting of House Republicans Tuesday morning ahead of the speaker vote, prompting backlash from Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX). McCarthy argued with Roy following the exchange with Rogers.

“All you’re doing is guaranteeing the vote,” Roy said after McCarthy laid into him, per a source in the room.

McCarthy acknowledged the sizable opposition to him at the meeting, saying, “Oh yeah, 20 of you are against me, I know, I’ve heard it all.”

At the vote later Tuesday, McCarthy needs the support of a majority of members voting and present in order to become speaker. With Democrats set on voting for Minority Leader-elect Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), that leaves McCarthy very little wiggle room to lose any of the 222 Republican votes. At least four and as many as 18 Republicans have said they’ll withhold their votes.
