Ukraine is ratcheting up the pressure against Russian forces near Kyiv, putting its troops in a position to possibly encircle Russian President Vladimir Putin’s soldiers in the outskirts of the capital city, the United Kingdom’s Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.
Facing supply shortages and morale problems, Russian forces have not been able to repel Ukrainian counterattacks outside Kyiv, and it seems Ukrainian forces have been able to retake the towns of Makariv and Moschun, according to the British Defense Ministry. This has set the stage for Ukrainian forces to take out the remaining Russian troops in Bucha and Irpin, 15 miles northwest of Kyiv’s city center, and prevent Russian forces from reaching the capital city.
“There is a realistic possibility that Ukrainian forces are now able to encircle Russian units in Bucha and Irpin,” the Ministry of Defense said on Wednesday. “It is likely that successful counter attacks by Ukraine will disrupt the ability of Russian forces to reorganise and resume their own offensive towards Kyiv.”

Ukrainian forces appear to be flipping the script on the Russian troops outside Kyiv that have been attempting to encircle the capital city.
NATO CHIEF EXPECTS ALLIES TO AGREE TO DEPLOY BATTLE GROUPS TO EASTERN FLANK
Over a week ago, the once 40-mile-long convoy of Russian military vehicles and artillery heading toward Kyiv began dispersing in the outskirts of the city in what the British Ministry of Defense said at the time was “likely to support a Russian attempt to encircle the city.”
The Pentagon on Wednesday told reporters that Russian troops to the northwest of the city are “basically digging in, and they are establishing defensive positions.”
“It’s not that they’re not advancing. They’re actually not trying to advance right now,” a Pentagon official explained.
