China vows ‘forceful’ response to US tariffs

A spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry vowed Wednesday that China would have a “resolution and forceful” response to the U.S. decision to impose tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese exports, but also called on the U.S. to step back from its “reckless” decision.

“We urge the United States to keep its promise, and meet China halfway in the spirit of the joint statement,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said during a daily news briefing, Reuters reported.

The Trump administration renewed its threat of tariffs on Tuesday, when it said it would publish a list of Chinese exports by June 15 that would be hit with tariffs unless China respects intellectual property rights and stops requiring production in China as a condition of selling in its market.

Hua warned the U.S. against acting in an “arbitrary and reckless manner,” Reuters said.
