FDA clears first smartphone app for controlling insulin delivery

The Food and Drug Administration approved the first smartphone app designed to help with insulin delivery.

Tandem Diabetes Care announced on Wednesday that the FDA cleared its t:connect mobile app for use. The app allows users to control bolus insulin delivery through the t:slim X2 insulin pump.

“This FDA clearance further validates our commitment to innovation and the diabetes community by providing one of the most requested feature enhancements,” Tandem CEO John Sheridan said in a press statement.

The app will be available on iOS and Android devices and will allow users of the t:slim X2 to activate the pump remotely, allowing diabetics to be more discreet while receiving their insulin doses. Users can program or cancel bolus insulin doses during meal times, which helps those with diabetes maintain their glucose levels while eating.

Owners of a t:slim X2 should receive a software update for the pump at no additional cost to make it compatible with the t:support app.

Tandem, which is based in California, said it had more than 200,000 customers as of 2020.
