The powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said another summit with President Trump would be beneficial only for the United States, according to state media.
Kim Yo Jong said she cannot see another meeting between Trump and her brother happening this year, but “a surprise thing may still happen,” state news agency KCNA reported Friday.
Her comments follow Secretary of State Mike Pompeo saying he was “very hopeful” that the two countries could resume talks about denuclearization in North Korea. On his recent visit to Seoul, Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun denied that he was seeking to meet with North Korean officials, but did say the U.S. was open to discussions.
“We do not have the slightest intention to pose a threat to the U.S.,” Kim Yo Jong said. “Everything will go smoothly if they leave us alone and make no provocation on us.”
Trump and the North Korean leader have met three times, but have failed to negotiate an end to North Korea’s nuclear weapons program as the country demands major sanctions relief.
