A prospective juror for the Parkland shooting trial cited obligations to her “sugar daddy” as an excuse to get out of jury duty.
A stunned Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer was taken aback by a request from “Miss Bristol” to return to her unconventional familial obligations but ultimately dismissed her from the jury.
“I have my sugar daddy that I see every day,” she said nonchalantly. “I’m married, and I have my sugar daddy. I see him every day.”

The juror also cited other personal obligations as cause for her dismissal, saying during the jury selection process Monday that July 2 is her birthday, July 4 is her son’s, and July 18 is her other son’s. Then she emphasized she has to “figure out something” in reference to her “sugar daddy.”
Befuddled, Scherer initially asked for clarification and then punted, “Ma’am, we’ll come back to you, OK? Thank you.”

Bristol was one of the roughly 120 prospective jurors let off the hook. A total of 12 jurors and eight alternatives will be selected once the process is complete.

Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz is set to face sentencing in a process that could stretch from June through September. He pleaded not guilty last October to 17 counts of attempted murder and 17 counts of first-degree murder in the 2018 slaughter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. A total of 17 people were killed and 17 people injured in the massacre. He could face up to life in prison or the death penalty if convicted.
The jury selection process began Monday and is expected to last two months. Scherer ruled that the jury would tour the building where the shooting rampage transpired, arguing it was important for the jury to evaluate the evidence.
