California Gov. Gavin Newsom blames Trump for ‘culture of gun violence’ after Gilroy shooting

California Gov. Gavin Newsom accused President Trump of lacking “moral authority” in the aftermath of the shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival.

Newsom, a Democrat, said Monday that there’s a “culture of gun violence and machismo” in the United States and that Trump has done little to solve gun violence.

“It’s just sickening … We have leadership today that just turns a blind eye to this and won’t do a damn thing to address these issues,” he told reporters Monday. “What’s goddamned absent in this country right now is moral authority on these issues.”

“I have no problem with the Second Amendment. You have a right to bear arms, but not weapons of goddamned mass destruction,” he added.

A gunman killed three people, including two children, when he opened fire at the festival Sunday evening. The gunman, identified as 19-year-old Santino William Legan, was fatally shot by police.

“We thank the brave members of law enforcement, they never let us down, who swiftly killed the shooter. We reaffirm our national will to answer violence with the courage, determination, and resolve of one American family,” Trump said Monday from the White House.
