Most fencing put up around White House during protests to be removed this week

Most of the fencing blocking off the park in front of the White House will be removed by Wednesday, according to the National Park Service.

The Park Service said late Monday that some fencing will stay in areas that were damaged during the demonstrations in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after a white police officer knelt on his neck as he pleaded for his life.

Lafayette Park has been closed since early last week, when law enforcement forcibly removed protesters from the area before President Trump walked from the White House to a nearby church that was damaged when protests became violent. A bathroom facility in the park was also damaged.

House and Senate Democrats have called on the president to remove the fencing, saying it “looks like a militarized zone.”

In the meantime, protesters have turned the fencing into a memorial wall, attaching posters honoring black Americans who have been killed by police.
