Satellite images show 40-mile Russian military convoy near Kyiv

Satellite images show a Russian military convoy stretching more than 40 miles long near Ukraine’s capital.

Maxar Technologies, a space technology company based in Colorado, said Monday evening that the length of the convoy — consisting of armored vehicles, tanks, towed artillery, and other logistical vehicles — on the roadways north of Kyiv had grown substantially since observing it to be roughly 3.5 miles long Sunday and 17 miles earlier Monday, according to CNN.

The same report said Maxar noted plumes of smoke rising from a number of homes and buildings north and northwest of Ivankiv. The company also said some areas of the roadways are so clogged with military vehicles that they are causing traffic jams for the convoy.

US EXPELS 12 RUSSIAN ‘INTELLIGENCE OPERATIVES’ AT THE UNITED NATIONS

Russia’s invasion began Thursday with President Vladimir Putin announcing a “special military operation” that he said was aimed at the “demilitarization and denazification” of Ukraine, not its occupation. Putin also warned other countries that any attempt to interfere would lead to “consequences you have never seen.”

The Ukrainians are mounting a fierce defense, including in Kyiv, and while Western intelligence has assessed that Russia’s progress has been slower than it expected, its military forces still far exceed Ukraine’s.

A Monday report from the Times of London claimed that more than 400 Russian operatives have been deployed to Kyiv on a mission from the Kremlin to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelensky and other targets.

Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s minister of digital transformation, pleaded with SpaceX founder Elon Musk on Saturday to help the country by providing his Starlink satellite internet service to keep the country online amid the invasion. Musk, just hours after the request, replied to Fedorov: “Starlink service is now active in Ukraine. More terminals en route.”
