Deval Patrick criticized his fellow 2020 Democrats for how they responded to the botched Iowa caucuses.
On Monday night, Iowa Democrats declined to announce the results due to a problem in the mobile app developed for precinct leaders to send in caucus results. With no winner announced, some of the candidates began to declare victory on their own.
Pete Buttigieg tweeted that his campaign was “victorious” in Iowa and “shocked the nation.” Bernie Sanders released his own internal reporting which claimed he had won the caucuses. Elizabeth Warren claimed she was in a three-way tie with Buttigieg and Sanders and alleged that Joe Biden was at a “distant” fourth. Biden’s campaign ripped the caucuses as “failed.”
In a statement posted Tuesday, Patrick condemned his competitors for their responses to the messy caucuses. He said, “One candidate is calling the results into question because he apparently didn’t do well. Another is declaring victory without any votes being confirmed. The way to beat Donald Trump isn’t to act like Donald Trump. Our party and our country deserve better.”
Patrick, the 63-year-old former governor of Massachusetts, announced his campaign for president in November, but he has struggled to gain traction. He has not qualified for any of the presidential debates, and his RealClearPolitics polling average is at less than 1% support nationwide.
