President Trump admonished former President Barack Obama on Monday, calling him “one of the worst presidents” in American history.
“I think President Obama was one of the worst presidents in the history of our country. I think he was an incompetent president,” Trump said during a session with reporters at the White House. “He left a broken military. ISIS was all over the place, and I got rid of it, I knocked out 100% of the caliphate. And when I came in, it was a mess. … We had a broken military, we had a depleted military, we had little on the shelves if you talk about pandemics.”
Trump has intensified his attacks on Obama in recent weeks.
One saga Trump and his supporters have focused heavily on is a scandal at the top level of Obama’s FBI and Justice Department, dubbed “Obamagate.”
Newly released documents in the case of retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn reveal FBI agents under Obama pushed ahead with a counterintelligence investigation against Flynn despite a lack of evidence. Trump has accused Obama of committing “the biggest political crime in American history, by far.”
When asked what the crime was, Trump told Washington Post reporter Philip Rucker last week: “You know what the crime is. The crime is very obvious to everybody. All you have to do is read the newspapers, except yours.”
The president has also hammered Obama over the country’s preparedness for the coronavirus pandemic.
“I inherited empty, empty — no ammunition,” Trump said during a virtual town hall on Fox News earlier this month. “Our military was bad. We rebuilt our military — $1.5 trillion. We have the best military, by far, in the world. … But you know what? Also, medically, we had empty cupboards.”
Over the weekend, Obama took an apparent dig at Trump, saying the pandemic has proven he and members of his administration do not have a solid strategy for combating the virus.
“This pandemic has fully, finally, torn back the curtain on the idea that so many of the folks in charge know what they’re doing,” Obama said.
Trump shot back, calling Obama “grossly incompetent.”
