Hassan Rouhani: ‘We will pass through this’ if Trump leaves deal

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned Tuesday that the country could “face problems” if President Trump pulls the U.S. out of the nuclear deal, but they will be short-lived.

“It is possible that we will face some problems for two or three months, but we will pass through this,” Rouhani said at a petroleum conference in Tehran Tuesday, marking the first official Iranian comment on Trump’s impending announcement.

However, Rouhani stressed that Iran will keep “working with the world and constructive engagement with the world,” apparently referencing the series of deals Iran struck with European countries since the 2015 nuclear deal’s inception.

Iranian first Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri on Tuesday also criticized Trump for the announcement, during which he expects the U.S. to pull out of the deal.

“Today, the biggest power in the world is yelling that it does not accept [the deal],” Jahangiri said, the Associated Press reported. “It’s up to them what to do with the deal, but [from now on only] naive individuals would accept to enter talks with such a country.”

Jahangiri said Iran has plans to manage the country if the U.S. were to pull out of the deal.

Trump tweeted on Monday that he would be announcing his decision Tuesday afternoon at 2 from the White House.
