Portland, Oregon, police declared a Tuesday night demonstration to be a riot and made arrests on the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s death.
Approximately 200 people gathered on Tuesday evening outside the Multnomah County Justice Center, according to the Oregonian. Some demonstrators lit fireworks and threw them and water bottles at police officers, the outlet reported.

Police declared the situation to be a riot at around 10 p.m. They also made an unspecified number of arrests.
Participants in the demonstration later smashed windows at various locations, including a jewelry and precious metals business, a Starbucks, a credit union, and a steakhouse.
Tuesday marked the one-year anniversary of Floyd’s death at the hands of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.
Chauvin used his knee to apply pressure to Floyd’s neck for more than 8 minutes after he appeared unresponsive. The former officer was found guilty of murdering Floyd, and he’s awaiting sentencing, which will take place next month. He was found guilty by a jury on charges of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and manslaughter.
Floyd’s death, in conjunction with other high-profile deaths at the hands of police, led to nationwide protests highlighting law enforcements’ use of force strategies and how they interact with people of color throughout 2020. Many protests turned violent at times over the course of the last year, and while the protests have died down for the most part, Portland has remained a hotbed for clashes between civilians and police.
