Meghan McCain, daughter of the late Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., participated in a heated exchange with “Late Night” host Seth Myers regarding her comments on Rep. Ilhan Omar’s controversial tweets.
Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota who has been accused of anti-Semitism, claimed she received an increase of death threats after President Trump tweeted out a video criticizing her remarks that “some people did something” on 9/11. After a shooting last month at a San Diego synagogue, McCain said that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., wasn’t “hard enough in her response to [Omar] trafficking in anti-Semitic language.”
Meyers claimed that is was “fairly dangerous” for McCain to raise Omar’s name after the shooting, and said he believed her comments on 9/11 were taken out of context. McCain, who has been critical of Trump, pushed back and asked him if the president would be granted the same standard.
“Would you give President Trump the same leverage if he had said the same thing?” McCain said. “I just think you have to give people the same credence.”
The tension escalated and McCain, who said she stands by all her past comments, addressed controversial tweets from Omar, including one where Omar said that U.S. politicians support for Israel was “all about the Benjamins baby,” a mention of $100 bills.
“You do keep bringing up the two tweets that she’s apologized for, and I think that’s a little unfair to her, especially because we’ve established …” Meyers said.
“Are you her publicist?” McCain asked.
Meyers denied that was the case, but said he is “someone who cares about the fact that there’s someone out there who is in a minority, who has had death threats against her, and I think that we should all use the same language that you’re asking her to be careful about her language, and I would ask everybody else to be careful about theirs.”
