Montgomery County started construction Wednesday on a new Equipment and Maintenance Operations Center near the Shady Grove Metro station. The facility is the first part of a smart growth project, aimed at developing and revitalizing the area around the Shady Grove Metro station.
The project is expected to save the county $22 million and create new jobs.
Slated for the site are new administrative buildings, employee, visitor and bus parking, and gas stations. The new facilities will be environmentally sustainable, with designs including green roofs that reduce stormwater runoff and mechanisms that reuse rainwater for washing buses and flushing toilets.
County Executive Ike Leggett, Councilwoman Nancy Floreen, D-at large, Department of Transportation Director Art Holmes and Department of General Services Director David Dise participated in the groundbreaking.
“By relocating old and overcrowded county government facilities to make way for a sustainable, transit-oriented community near Metro, we are boosting the economic health and competitiveness of Montgomery County,” Leggett said.
