More than 100,000 homes without power after Northeastern storms

More than 100,000 people were left without power after a heavy storm slammed the Northeast on Monday.

Residents in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania faced a severe thunderstorm watch on Monday as a large storm passed through the Northeastern part of the United States.

An estimated 50,000 customers in New York were left without power early Tuesday morning, while 26,000 residents in Pennsylvania lacked access to power due to strong winds hitting the area, according to Poweroutage.us.

Parts of Pennsylvania and two New Jersey counties were placed under a severe thunderstorm warning as of Monday night as strong storms with damaging winds and small hail appeared over the regions. Some regions, including Newark, experienced winds up to 60 mph, leading to fallen trees and disrupted power cables.

Local police reported that several roads were closed in Hackettstown due to downed trees on wires, according to NJ.com. All of New Jersey was under a wind advisory until Tuesday at 1 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

States in the mid-Atlantic, the central Appalachians, and the Northeast could experience some light snow accumulation due to a significant amount of cold air locking above the region, the National Weather Service added.
