Sen. Ted Cruz and other Republicans excoriated Democrats and the government after a report found an estimated 3 million children have “fallen off the grid” and are not showing up to their virtual classes.
“Three…million…kids. Fallen off the grid. Abandoned. Dem politicians are fine with it — want it to continue indefinitely,” Cruz tweeted on Tuesday. “Enough. #OpenSchoolsNow.”

Cruz was responding to a report that approximately 3 million students may have gone “missing” from school since last March when schools were locked down over the coronavirus.
STUDENTS GO MISSING AS REMOTE LEARNING TAKES HOLD DURING PANDEMIC
Rep. Nancy Mace and others joined Cruz in condemning the government for lockdowns that reportedly resulted in so many children going missing.
“This is what happens when anti-science fearmongers, petty tyrants, and government union officials are the ones making decisions. Good job, government. Good job,” Mace tweeted

The consequences of failing to reopen our schools will affect our students for years to come.
There’s simply no excuse for keeping schools closed. We must reopen our schools now. https://t.co/S89DO49NmE

.
This is disgraceful.
K-12 school closures have harmed our children academically, physically, emotionally and developmentally.
And if that weren’t enough, thousands of students are now unaccounted for entirely.
Enough is enough. Our children need to be back in school. https://t.co/liNd4f6V0C

The report comes as some teachers unions across the country have fought against going back into the classrooms to teach out of fear it could worsen the coronavirus pandemic.
However, various studies conducted in the United States and abroad have found children are at low risk of spreading the virus.
In states such as Florida and South Dakota, Republican governors who resisted lockdowns have taken victory laps for providing students with normal schedules of in-class learning.
“South Dakota students have been learning IN THE CLASSROOM this entire school year,” South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem tweeted Tuesday. “It’s the best decision for their overall health. And it’s the best way that we can help them learn and grow for a lifetime of success.”

“Florida’s schools are open, and we are one of only a handful of states in which every parent has a right to send their child to school in person. All Floridians have a right to earn a living, and our citizens are employed at higher rates than those in the nation as a whole. Every job is essential,” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said during his State of the State address on Tuesday.
The anti-lockdown messaging appears to have support among GOP voters, with attendees of the Conservative Political Action Conference signaling DeSantis and Noem are their top choices for the 2024 presidential election if former President Donald Trump doesn’t run.
