At least one of the four Russian generals killed in Moscow’s war on Ukraine was done in by talking on an unsecured phone, allowing Ukrainian forces to pinpoint his location and bomb it, according to a report.
It’s not clear which of the generals paid the ultimate price for getting sloppy, but many of the estimated 20 high-ranking Russian military leaders are using unsecured phones and radios, the report said. In at least one case, Ukrainian forces intercepted a general’s call, locked in on his location, and killed him and his staff.
“One more general is among the killed invaders,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier this week after Ukrainian officials reported the death of Maj. Gen. Oleg Mityaev, the commander of the 150th Motorized Rifle Division.
Mityaev, 46, was killed Tuesday during a battle with the Ukrainian Azov regiment in the southern coastal city of Mariupol, according to Ukrainian Interior Ministry adviser Anton Gerashchenko, who posted a graphic photo of the dead general on social media.

The death of Mityaev followed those of Maj. Gen. Andrei Kolesnikov of the 29th Combined Arms Army on March 11, Maj. Gen. Vitaly Gerasimov, chief of staff of the 41st Army, who died March 7 outside Kharkiv, and Maj. Gen. Andrey Sukhovetsky, the deputy commander of the 41st Combined Arms Army of Russia’s Central Military District who was reportedly picked off by a Ukrainian sniper on March 3 outside of Kyiv.
With four Russian generals already dead in just three weeks, the toll has surpassed the number killed in the Syrian civil war, where Russia fought on the side of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly grown frustrated with his top military brass for stalled progress in Ukraine and the mounting losses his army is taking.
At Putin’s behest, several Russian military generals have reportedly been fired, and a top spy has been arrested.
U.S. intelligence officials estimate at least 7,000 Russian troops have been killed and that 14,000 to 21,000 have been injured in the now-three-week-old war.
