Midterm results: Democrat Chris Pappas reelected in New Hampshire’s 1st District

Rep. Chris Pappas (D) has won reelection in New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District, fending off a spirited challenge from Republican Karoline Leavitt.

The race was one of the closest of the midterm cycle, with Leavitt polling several points ahead of Pappas in the final week. It was also notable due to the age of Leavitt, who at 25 could have the youngest member of the lower chamber in the 118th Congress. The race took place in a perennial swing district that has switched between Republican and Democratic representation five times since 2006.

Pappas was first elected to the House in 2018 after Democratic Rep. Carol Shea-Porter decided not to run for reelection. He is a member of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the Committee on Veterans affairs, as well as co-chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus and a member of the New Democrat Coalition. He has voted with President Joe Biden’s agenda 100% of the time.

Leavitt worked in communications in the Trump White House and narrowly won the Republican primary in September. She was endorsed by former President Donald Trump and Republican Caucus Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY). If elected, she would have been one of two Generation Z members of the House in the next Congress along with Florida Democrat Maxwell Frost, who is favored to win his election.

“This election is not about Donald Trump. It’s about Joe Biden and Chris Pappas, and it’s a referendum on the policies that they’ve put in place over the past two years, which are hurting the American people,” Leavitt told the Washington Examiner last week.

Both candidates raised large sums of money, with Pappas raising over $4.7 million and Leavitt raising over $3.1 million, according to the most recent Federal Election Commission filings.
