‘Black Widow — Queen of Justice’: Brexit opponents hail judge Lady Hale after she rules against Boris Johnson

A Supreme Court ruling in the United Kingdom made waves early in the morning on Tuesday as Lady Brenda Hale, President of the Court, ruled that Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s suspension of Parliament this summer was “unlawful.”

Lady Hale, the 74-year-old Baroness Hale of Richmond, asserted that Johnson’s suspension “had the effect of frustrating or preventing Parliament from carrying out its constitutional functions.” The shocking ruling from the court effectively voids the five-week suspension leading up to the Oct. 31 deadline for the U.K. to exit the European Union with or without a deal.

Johnson’s critics and anti-Brexiters praised Lady Hale for her ruling and took special notice of a spider brooch she wore while delivering remarks on her decision. Social media erupted with praise for the justice, despite the rulings contradiction to the U.K.’s unwritten constitution. The 10-year-old Supreme Court has not historically involved itself in politics.

“This is not the most important aspect of the ruling by far but I just want to say that I really appreciate lady hale bringing this goth queen look to the supreme court today,” one Twitter user said.

“What an absolute star she is!” European Parliament member Molly Scott Cato wrote. “Never mind wolf in sheep’s clothing, Lady Hale is a rotweiler [sic] masquerading as a grandmother.”

“I am particularly loving Lady Hale’s ‘Black Widow – Queen of Justice’ vibe,” said Ingrid Oliver.
