Protesters deliver casket filled with cow manure and dirt to police following Breonna Taylor charging decision

Police in North Carolina say protesters left an unwelcome gift at their door following the announcement that no officers would be charged with killing Breonna Taylor.

The Asheville Police Department said that 150 protesters gathered outside of their headquarters on Wednesday night and left a casket filled with dirt and cow manure.

One person was assaulted during the protests and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Protests broke out around the country on Wednesday evening, including in Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Portland, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Denver, San Diego, and Seattle. Riots were declared in Portland and San Diego. Police in Seattle declared the protests as an unlawful assembly and arrested 13 individuals.

The unrest came after Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron announced that no Louisville Metro Police Department officers had been indicted by a grand jury in the death of 26-year-old Taylor. Former Detective Brett Hankison was charged with three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment for putting Taylor’s neighbors in danger during the raid.

Taylor was killed on March 13 during the execution of a “no-knock” warrant on her apartment. The LMPD officers did not identify themselves as police, according to Taylor’s boyfriend. The city of Louisville settled with Taylor’s family for $12 million.

Two police officers in Louisville, Kentucky, were shot amid the nationwide wave of demonstrations. The officers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
