Trump claims he’s ‘the best thing’ to happen to Puerto Rico

President Trump lashed out at Puerto Rican politicians again early Tuesday, accusing them of being incompetent and corrupt, and claimed he is “the best thing” ever to happen to the U.S. territory.

“The [politicians] are grossly incompetent, spend the money foolishly or corruptly, & only take from USA,” Trump tweeted. “The best thing that ever happened to Puerto Rico is President Donald J. Trump. So many wonderful people, but with such bad Island leadership and with so much money wasted.”

The tweets come a day after Senate Democrats voted down a disaster relief package that they said did not include enough funding to help the island after it was ravaged by hurricanes last year.

Trump also expressed his outrage toward Puerto Rican leaders in several tweets Monday night. In that diatribe, he took aim at San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz, who has frequently criticized the Trump administration’s response to the hurricanes as insufficient.

In her response to the president on Twitter, Cruz said Trump is “unhinged” and accused him of lying about the money Puerto Rico has received.
