Former CIA director Mike Pompeo, who is expected to be confirmed by the Senate Thursday, is slated to visit Israel as early as next week on his first trip abroad in his new position.
The stop in Israel and several other countries, will follow his visit to Brussels Friday for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization foreign ministers summit, according to an Israeli official, the Times of Israel reported.
There have been no reports on whether Pompeo plans to visit with Palestinian leaders, who have refused to meet with U.S. officials since President Trump declared in December that the U.S. recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
During his year as secretary of state under the Trump administration, Rex Tillerson visited Israel only one time, and it was alongside Trump’s team during the president’s visit. Tillerson never made an independent trip from his one with Trump.
However, during that same year’s time, while Pompeo was director of the CIA, he visited Israel on three separate occasions.
