Joe Biden would still beat Trump in a hypothetical 2020 matchup

Former Vice President Joe Biden would beat President Trump in a hypothetical matchup in the 2020 presidential election, according to a poll released Wednesday morning.

Biden had a 7-point advantage over the incumbent Republican among registered voters questioned from July 26-30, a Morning Consult-Politico survey concluded.

Fourty-four percent of voters said they would pick former President Barack Obama’s right-hand man, compared with 37 percent who said they would go for Trump.

The majority of millennials flocked to the former Delaware senator over Trump: 53 percent to 23 percent. Trump performed better than Biden among white voters: 43 to 39 percent.

However, Biden’s lead over Trump has decreased slightly since the same poll was taken in November. Nine months ago, Biden had a 9-point lead over Trump.

A generic Democratic candidate would outperform Biden in a race against Trump by 13 points, nearly double the 7-point lead. That figure has stayed about the same since late last year, with 48-49 percent of voters choosing a Democrat compared to the 34-35 percent of people who would select Trump on the ballot.

The online survey was conducted among 1,993 registered voters nationwide and has a 2 percentage point margin of error.
