A man who is believed to have stabbed and killed an elderly woman in Texas over the weekend during a carjacking had been arrested dozens of times and was out on bond, according to local media reports.
80-year-old Rosalie Cook was picking up a prescription from a Walgreens in Houston on Saturday when Randy Lewis approached her and stabbed her in the chest, according to local station KTRK.
Police said Lewis got into a confrontation with a responding officer and that he was shot twice and killed.
Court records showed Lewis has been charged with dozens of crimes during his life, including assault, burglary, possession of marijuana, and others. Lewis was released from a mental institution earlier in May.
“This is tragic, but the most tragedy here is that a woman has died from a guy who attacked her for no other reason other than to steal from her and carjack her,” said Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo.
Cook’s family described her as the “perfect grandma,” according to KTRK.
“She was just a precious lady,” her son, Chuck Cook, said. “Well loved by so many people.”
